"Under the spreading chestnut tree I sold you and you sold me: There lie they, and here lie we Under the spreading Chestnut tree." book 1, chapter 7, page 77. I took this quote because I felt maybe there is a strategy to how the telescreen talks and to how the telescrren is setup to show what would most interest the mind and convince the viewer the telescreen is the most important thing and the viewer should focus only on the screen. this is in an attempt to stop the person from letting their mind wander and think bad thought. "He took his scribbling pad on his knee and pushed back his chair so as to get as far away from the telescreen as possible. to keep your face expressionless was not difficult, and even your breathing could be controlled, with an effort; but you could not control the beating of your heart, and the telescreen was quite delicate enough to pick it up." This excerpt from the paragraph shows how advanced the technology was thought to be in 1984. The idea of technology so sensitive that your beating heart can be used as a way of knowing how you are feeling when you have already stopped your face from showing expression and your breathing is controlled. I think however if you control your breathing enough your heart rate can be slowed down too. however this takes more concentration than the frap roast at Starbucks. knowing how you feel or whats going on inside your body is so important they invested so much money into a telescreen just to monitor the slight imperfections with the way you feel. This puts me on an edge and makes me wonder if we have this kind of equipment ready to implement in our households. has it already happened just on a smaller scale?
Journal Entry 1: "to the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men different from one another and do not live alone to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone." Part 1, Chapter 2 page 27. This quote means a lot to the book as of right now. This quotes summarizes what has been going on and is directed towards people who are more free. whether the people will soon be free again in the future or whether the time of being free is far in the past, this letter is towards the free souls. This letter is towards people who wish to keep their thoughts. And although nothing special is in this letter but a simple hello. this calls onto the darkness of what the novel is. this quote summarizes the plot thus far in such a way that only the reader can understand. this quote is set to be in third person in order to have an effect on the reader with a poem feeling to it. This letter also feels like it could come from someone who is more superior or more advanced in a sense to be able to see whats going on and to elaborate on the problems the people are facing.
